This volume as it highlights UNRISD’s pioneering, agenda-setting work in integrating the social and environmental dimensions of development, advancing the analysis of sustainable development and related resource and environmental issues from the perspective of social justice norms. In recent years, for example, such work has refocused attention on inequality. Similarly, UNRISD’s major project on social policy in the last decade helped pave the way for the 2012 UN adoption of the universal concept of a social protection floor. In both strong and subtle ways, this body of work has been crucial in influencing United Nations processes which are key to mobilizing requisite political will.
